A money expert has revealed when you should aim to pay your bills

You might find that different bills like your rent, water, gas and electricity come out of your account throughout different points of the month.

Posting to her TikTok account under the handle @clevergirlfinance, Bola explained why organising them around your payday will help you save and manage your money better.

She said: “This will help you stay organised and you can plan your bill due dates around when you get paid.”

Bola said to call your providers or lenders and ask them to move your bill due dates to specific dates around when you get paid.

“Most providers will as long as it’s within a certain number of days of the original bill due date,” she said.

Her tip was liked by hundreds of people, with one fan saying her advice was “brilliant”.

The Sun looked into a number of big providers and lenders to see what their bill payment data change policies are.

Banks

Barclaycard customers can change their payment dates via the Barclaycard app, using the Chat service.

A helper will then see if they can change the date to the one you want – if not, they will offer you one as near to the date you want.

You can’t switch dates if you’ve changed it twice in the last 12 months.

You can easily switch payment dates at Nationwide too – all you need to do is call its help desk on 03456 00 66 11.

And for HSBC, call the help team on 03457 404 404.

Broadband providers

Virgin Media customers can only change their bill date twice in a 12 month period.

Changing the date will change the start date of your monthly package – it means the first bill you get after the change could be higher.

Text the company on 0753 305 1809.

Sky customers can only change their payment date to a day between the 1-28 of each month.

You can only change it once a month.

If you are a BT customer and pay your bills monthly or every quarter, you can change your payment date.

Mobile phone providers

Three customers can go onto their Three app and change their payment date there.

You can change the date after your first bill, but make sure there’s more than 48 hours left before your next payment is due.

Vodafone customers can go online and start a chat with its help desk if they want to change their payment date.

EE customers can go onto the provider’s website, log into their account and change the payment date themselves.

Any changes you make will impact your next bill – you’ll be charged more if you move your bill to a later date, for example.

How to get help if you’re struggling paying bills

If you can’t pay your mobile, phone, internet or TV bill, Citizens Advice says you should contact your provider and ask for help.

They might agree to reducing your bill, increase your data or download limit, or move you to a different contract that suits you better.

For water bills, you could get help through a scheme called WaterSure.

This allows water companies to cap bills for customers on certain benefits who use a lot of water for essential family or health reasons.

If you’re in debt to your energy supplier, you might be able to get a grant from a number of companies to help pay it off.

For example, the British Gas Energy Trust is open to everyone, not just British Gas customers, and you can find out more and apply here.
