WHATSAPP users send roughly 100 billion messages everyday, according to owner Mark Zuckerberg.

The Facebook CEO revealed the whopping statistic as part of the company’s quarterly earnings conference call.

This figure may seem outstanding but last year WhatsApp users did send 100 billion messages on New Years Eve.

That’s normally a very busy time for messaging though so that amount being sent on less important days is a big step.

Back in 2014, WhatsApp users were sending around 50 billion texts a day in total.

So it’s taken just six years for that to double and each year has seen more growth.

WhatsApp now has around 2 billion monthly active users.

So if 2 billion people are sending 100 billion messages a day, that only works out as 50 texts each.

You might think you send far more and some people may send less.

Head of WhatsApp Will Cathcart tweeted: “This year we’ve all relied on messaging more than ever to keep up with our loved ones and get business done.

“We are proud that @WhatsApp is able to deliver roughly 100B messages every day and we’re excited about the road ahead.”

Zuckerberg also revealed that there’s around 1 billion daily users of the Stories features across Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

WhatsApp – a quick history

Here’s what you need to know…

  • WhatsApp was created in 2009 by computer programmers Brian Acton and Jan Koum – former employees of Yahoo
  • It’s one of the most popular messaging services in the world
  • Koum came up with the name WhatsApp because it sounded like “what’s up”
  • After a number of tweaks the app was released with a messaging component in June 2009, with 250,000 active users
  • It was originally free but switched to a paid service to avoid growing too fast. Then in 2016, it became free again for all users
  • Facebook bought WhatsApp Inc in February 2014 for $19.3billion (£14.64bn)
  • The app is particularly popular because all messages are encrypted during transit, shutting out snoopers
  • As of 2020, WhatsApp has over 2billion users globally
