To help cut costs for the big day, wedding planner Emily Andrew, from emilyandrewevents.co.uk, gives her tips.

PACKAGE DEAL: Find a venue that has a variation of packages and compare them all to find where you can save money. Ask exactly what is included in each package and make sure it is clear.

Usually the compromise of saving money is that you lose a little flexibility in your choices, so it is best to be aware of that.

TIME IT RIGHT: When it comes to picking a date, look for off-season or midweek deals. Venues will often offer lower prices to couples booking outside of peak season, which is classed as April to September.

Also, a venue that gives you the freedom to plan the day your way can make a huge difference to your budget.

A later ceremony means you can skip the wedding breakfast and only have to feed guests once.

HIDDEN EXTRAS: Check for hidden costs. For example, if your venue offers the option of an outside ceremony, sometimes they will expect you to hire separate chairs for that part of your day, or a PA system for your vows, which can really eat into your budget.

MEAL STEAL: After the venue, your next biggest expense will be the food for your guests, assuming it is not included.

Choosing somewhere that gives you flexibility with the style of food you offer can save money. For example, try a barbecue or a buffet rather than a set three-course meal.

SUPPLIER SAVING: Selecting a place that does not stipulate specific wedding suppliers can sometimes be more cost effective. It is not uncommon for venues to charge commission for their recommended suppliers. This can mean you are paying as much as ten per cent extra, so always check.
