John Lewis wants viewers to spread kindness through its new advert

It’s made up of nine different scenes, each of which are made up of different arts forms – including live action, animation, CGI and claymation – and feature acts of goodwill

The scenes are connected to create a long chain of giving, as each film passes the campaign’s heart emblem on to the next part of the film.

John Lewis has also released an additional 30-second advert on the side – you can which it below – which encourages people to donate to this year’s partner charities Home-Start and FareShare.

But unlike previous John Lewis adverts, which all feature covers of existing songs, both clips feature a new original track.

Who sings in the 2020 John Lewis advert?

This year’s song, which is titled A Little Love, was written and recorded by 26-year-old British soul singer Celeste.

Fans of the track will be able to download it from today, with 10p from each download going to Home-Start and FareShare.

Despite having not released her debut album yet, Celeste, who was born in California but raised in England from the age of three, already has a Brit Award and BBC Music Award under her belt.

She was also named as breakthrough act of 2020 in an annual BBC poll of music critics.

Celeste will release her debut self-titled album on January 29, 2021.

Speaking about the John Lewis advert, Celeste said: “I felt honoured to be asked to take part.

“I wanted to create something that felt classic but still true to who I am as a writer and performer.”

John Lewis and Waitrose & Partners are on a mission to raise £4m for charities plus £1m for local charities this Christmas and we need your help to give a little love

Which singers have featured in previous John Lewis adverts?

Last year’s Edgar the Dragon advert featured a cover of REO Speedwagon’s 80s classic Can’t Fight This Feeling by Dan Smith from Bastille.

Before that, the 2018 release saw Elton John performed his classic hit Your Song as the advert celebrated his life and career.

How to donate to the John Lewis charity appeal

There are several ways you can help support both FareShare and Home-Start through John Lewis.

The retailer says donations worth £3 would give a gift to a child and £10 would help pay for a permanent carer for a set amount of time.

  • Make a charity donation which will be matched by the retailer to the value of £2million. Donations can be made by text or online through the John Lewis and Waitrose websites. Text “LOVE” to 70630 to donate £3, text “FAMILY” to donate £5, text “MEALS” to donate £10, or text “VISIT” to donate £20.
  • Buy one of a variety of exclusive and limited edition campaign products – see the full merchandise range here. John Lewis and Waitrose will give 100% of the profits to the charities.
  • Shopping in one of the two retailers’ shops and using your My John Lewis and My Waitrose loyalty card which will trigger a 1p per transaction donation.

If you can’t afford to donate, John Lewis is also encouraging people to show kindness to someone who needs it.

In addition, you can see if anyone in your local community needs support

Other artists that have appeared in John Lewis ads include rock band Elbow, who covered The Beatles’ Golden Slumbers in 2017 for the Moz the Monster release.

This followed the Vaults’ version of Randy Crawford’s One Day I’ll Fly Away for the 2016 Buster the Boxer advert.

And before that, Norwegian singer-songwriter Aurora covered Oasis’ Half The World Away for the 2015 Man on the Moon advert.
