A BRAND new Apple app is set to land on millions of iPhones today – alongside a mega-boost to the camera – which customers say is “the best thing ever”.

iOS 17.2 is now available to download for free for a raft of iPhone users – check your Settings to see if you’re eligible.

Once iOS 17.2 is downloaded, Journal will be automatically installed on the device

The Journal app is Apple’s attempt at taking a diary out of the physical world and into the digital realm.

Apple unveiled Journal alongside iOS 17 at its WWDC event in June – where the app drew a lot of attention.

The app was notably missing from the highly anticipated iOS 17 update, which arrived hand-in-hand with the new iPhone 15, as well as the iOS 17.1 update.

However, it has finally landed on iPhones with the most recent iOS 17.2 update, which became available last night.

Once iOS 17.2 is downloaded, Journal will be automatically installed on the device.

The app lets users write journal entries and insert pictures, videos and other content into entries.

It’s like an end-to-end-encrypted version of social media, just, slightly less social.

You can even lock up your entries with Face ID or a passcode – which is far more secure than a paperback version.

According to Apple, machine learning – also known as artificial intelligence (AI) – is employed to create personalised suggestions of moments for you to remember and write about based on your photos, music, and even your workouts.

Apple has provided full instructions on how to use the new native app on its website.

Beta testers loved it – and now it has been released into the wild, regular iPhone owners are obsessed.

“This new Journal app is the best thing ever,” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Another tweeted: “I am beyond impressed with the new journaling app.

“I am NOT someone who journals or has journaled ever.

“But Apple has found a way to make it dead easy by enticing you to journal.

“They put together an entry for you that is 80 per cent – 90 per cent done so all you have to do is input a few words. Amazingly done.”

Although, it’s safe to say some folks will be sticking with their paperback version – with the main complaint being that journaling should be detached from technology.

Camera upgrade

The camera upgrade offers those with an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max the option to shoot clips in spatial video format – the same technique used to create 3D blockbuster movies.

“iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max feature the most powerful camera systems we’ve ever developed, including the best video quality in any smartphone,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

“And now, we’re setting a new bar for what’s possible, enabling users to record special moments just as they happened.

“Spatial videos are magical, and we can’t wait for users to experience them on Apple Vision Pro early next year.”
