IF you want to save a bit of money, you might want to consider trimming your iPhone’s battery life.

It might sound like a strange idea – but future you might be thankful.

If you’ve got an iPhone running iOS 13 or later, there’s a feature called Optimized Battery Charging that can protect your battery.

It works by limiting how much time your iPhone spends at 100% charge to protect the battery.

This is a good idea, as it means you won’t have to buy a battery replacement or upgrade to a new model so soon.

But if you have an iPhone 15, there’s an even more powerful version of this feature that lets you reduce your battery life 80% of its maximum capacity.

Optimized Battery Charging on iPhone explained

Optimized Battery Charging is switched on by default if you have an iPhone running iOS 13.

It’s designed to protect your battery in the long run.

“A battery’s chemical age results from a complex combination of several factors, including temperature history and charging pattern,” Apple explained.

“All rechargeable batteries are consumable components that become less effective as they chemically age.

“As lithium-ion batteries chemically age, the amount of charge they can hold diminishes.

“Resulting in reduced battery life and reduced peak performance.”

Your iPhone will learn your charging habits – which for most people will take place at night – and delay a full-charge.

It will hold your charge at 80%, only topping it up to 100% when it thinks you’ll need it.

If you hold on to an iPhone for several years, you’ll find that the battery performs worse over time.

You could always upgrade your model, but this is expensive.

A battery replacement is a cheaper option, but still costs money.

So if you can keep your battery in better health for longer, you won’t have to fork out for upgrades or battery swaps as often.

And this will save you some cash in the long run.

iPhone 15 80% battery limit explained

If you’ve got an iPhone 15, you can go one step further.

It’s possible to totally limit your iPhone to 80% of its maximum capacity.

“When you choose 80% Limit, your iPhone will charge up to about 80 percent and then stop charging,” Apple explained.

“If the battery charge level gets down to 75 percent, charging will resume until your battery charge level reaches about 80 percent again.

“With 80% Limit enabled, your iPhone will occasionally charge to 100 percent to maintain accurate battery state-of-charge estimates.”

To change this feature, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging > Charging Optimization.
